We are proud to announce that Ananda College is once again leading educational innovation in Sri Lanka. Old Anandians Professional Forum (OAPF) has launched a project to introduce STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) education at Ananda College. STEAM education is relatively new in Sri Lanka, having been introduced only in 2023. The transition to STEAM education is slow as the National Curriculum is still being developed. The slow transition to STEAM education within the national system has allowed fee-charging private providers to enter the education sector.

What is STEAM Education?
Numerous experts regard STEAM as pivotal for today’s education. According to the US Department of Education, young individuals require knowledge and skills to address problems, comprehend information, and assess evidence. STEAM, by encompassing Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, fosters interdisciplinary learning and problem-solving. This methodology enhances creativity, innovation, and critical thinking. STEAM is frequently deemed more inclusive than STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) as it also accommodates children who possess innate abilities in creative disciplines, enabling them to feel acknowledged and allowing their talents to flourish.

The OAPF Project
The OAPF plans to establish a STEAM Education Centre at Ananda College using the already upgraded Pasmahala building. This project includes creating nine Learning Centers, an Auditorium and buying necessary equipment. The vision for the Pasmahala STEAM Education Centre is vividly illustrated through a 3D architectural rendering. This visual representation highlights the various specialized centers that will be part of the project, emphasizing the comprehensive nature of the educational offerings.

We highly commend the efforts of the OAPF to enhance the quality of free education provided at Ananda College. Their initiatives will enable current and future students to reach their full potential. The total project value is estimated at Rs 350 million. Contracts have been signed for work in four classrooms, costing about Rs 80 million. These four classrooms are expected to be completed within the next 3-4 months.

A significant fund-raising campaign has been initiated, with Rs 78.5 million already donated and an additional Rs 75 million pledged to date.

To date, the Old Anandians Association of Victoria (OAVV) has contributed A$5,000 to this project, with an additional A$5,000 pledged for later this year. As alumni residing in Victoria, we intend to raise further funds to support this important initiative. Our goal is to collect an additional sum of approximately A$25,000 through individual contributions of A$100 or more per donation within the next 3-4 months. Funds raised will be directed through the OAAV to the OAPF.

Our Next Step & Target Dates:

~ Our goal is to raise A$25,000 by requesting a minimum donation of A$100 or more from at least 250 Old-Anandians in Victoria.

~ The funding initiative will begin in July 2025, starting on 1st August and closing on 30th September 2025.

The funds collected will be used for refurbishing classrooms and purchasing equipment for the STEAM Education Centre to enhance the learning environment.

~ The total contributions will be deposited into the OAPF – Steam Project fund by October 15, 2025.

~ Meanwhile, we invite all Anandians to become members of the OAPF and contribute to the future success of Ananda College. Attaining life member status presents a distinguished opportunity for individuals who meet the criteria for special recognition. For more information and to join, please follow the link:
