May 12: OAAV Contribution To “මනූසාත් දෙරණ”

Further to our first food relief initiative concluded last week, the OAAV intends on contributing to the “මනූසාත් දෙරණ” humanitarian efforts in Sri Lanka. Most of you would be familiar with this program. It has been far reaching across the breadth and depth of some of the most remote locations, in assisting desperate families with food shortages.

The OAAV intends to re-allocate funds from our scholarship fund for this contribution. A donation of AU$ 12,700 will be presented for the supply of dry rations via this program, to long suffering families in rural areas. When circumstances in desperate times demand, we are pleased the OAAV can assist even in a small way from a distance.

Our objective is to remit funds by the 12th May. Please join hands with us in these relief efforts. We will keep you updated with the progress of this initiative in the coming weeks.

April 8: Assistance to Anandian International students In need

Together, we are facing truly unprecedented times. The global coronavirus pandemic is affecting all of our families, our businesses, our communities, and our daily way of life. It would be near impossible to locate a single human in the world who has not been impacted or touched in some way or form by this crisis.

First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers go out to anyone who's been impacted by the virus, either directly or indirectly. Our prayer are especially with those who are sick, to whom we extend our heartfelt wishes for a full speedy recovery.

Further, we're truly inspired by the selfless acts of kindness and compassion, shown by many people from all walks of life across the world, and to all front line workers and support staff working tirelessly to care for people in need.

Our thoughts are now with many old Anandian’s currently on temporary visas studying in Melbourne. We understand that many of them are impacted by this crisis, due to loss of employment and some are looking forward to going home as soon as Sri Lanka opens its borders. In the meantime, the OAAV is keen to ascertain the requirements of these students, so we can facilitate and assist in areas where possible to our utmost ability. If you are aware of any Anandian students who needs assistance, please request them to contact one of the following committee members or the OAAV via our Facebook or any other social media platform. The OAAV respects each individuals privacy and will handle the matter in strict confidence.

In the true sprit of Ananda, many people have indicated their willingness to assist in various ways. We would further like to appeal to our membership during these difficult times to assist us in this endeavour, so that we can help others by what ever means possible. The OAAV is keen to assist where ever possible, when ever possible, so please pass on this information to any Anandian students in need.

In closing, we wish all of our members & their families and friends, good health, peace of mind and the blessings of the triple Gem!

Please contact Ashad(0416 187 600), Chatura(0411 571 972), Dushan(0405 967 874), Tyrone(0417 382 660) or any OBA committee members for more information.

May 1: Covid-19 Food Relief Program

The Covid-19 crisis has been causing profound shock, despair, untold suffering & hardship across many nations and communities. We all have plunged into uncertain times with drastic transformations taking place in our economies and lifestyles. In these unprecedented times, while old alliances are put to the test and new ones formed, as new chapters of history are being written, we all are called to unite and help in a sea of humanitarian efforts across the globe.

As the aftershock of this devastation continues, many families in Sri Lanka have been left vulnerable with no income due to current lockdowns and face immense hardship feeding themselves. As Anandians, In the true spirit of helping, the OAAV has been assisting in a grass roots level Food Relief program in Sri Lanka during the past several weeks. This initiative has focused on providing food rations to disabled and the most desperate families in various areas.

The OAAV has donated Rs. 350,000/= (AU$ 3000) for the supply of dry rations via the

“අත් වැල” charity initiative in Sri Lanka, led by a group of fellow Anandians. Each dry ration pack is estimated around Rs. 700/= and consist of a variation of items including 2-3Kg Rice, 1 Kg Flour, 1Kg Dhal, Salmon Tins, Milk tins, Onions etc. The OAAVs target was to donate around 500 such packs. So far, this first phase has donated:

· 350 dry rations packs on the 29th April in the Katukurunda, Anguruwathota, Meegama and few other areas.

· 10 days of food supplies donated to “Meth Sewa Foundation” in Wellawaya. This childrens home of over 100 children were running out of food.

· Madiwela Children's home where there are about 50 children, with acute food shortages (to be delivered in the next few days)

We are grateful that we have been able to assist in even the smallest way possible, and we continue to focus our efforts on the next phase of relief programs, which we will inform you very soon. Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who has assisted us in this initiative, and here are a few pictures from the efforts in Sri Lanka.

Bushfire Relief Fund

As we all are well aware, bushfires have been ravaging the country for months, devastating towns, rural communities and livelihoods. With so many Australians suffering devastation and loss from the bushfires ravaging many parts of the nation, we want to help in the smallest possible way with the relief and rebuilding efforts.

The Old Anandians Association Of Victoria (OAAV) are calling on all members, friends, family and associates to support and help those affected. The proceeds of this campaign will be donated to the relief efforts of the iconic Victorian holiday town of Mallacoota.

The OAAV has opened a GoFundMe page to collect donations. Please click on the link below to help with this community cause.…

Your kind contributions will be most graciously appreciated by this local community at this difficult time.

Donated - This was an initiative from the OAAV to help during the Bushfire crisis several months ago. We did a fund raiser from the public (Go Fund Me) and raised close $1465, and the OAAV topped it and donated $1500 for the efforts.
