Vidyartha winners, Ananda runners-up at chess (2008/11/20)

Vidyartha College, Kandy did well to win the all island under-12 'A' div. chess championship with Ananda as runners-up at the chess championship organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Chess Association and held at Nalanda College, Colombo and was a 6 round tournament recently.

20 teams took part in this age group category from islandwide. In a 'cliff hanger' in this 'battle of the brains' tournament, Vidyartha College, Kandy, did well to win the championship by gaining 24 points as against 23 points gained by Ananda.

Ananda's 23 points comprised of wins against Maliyadeva College (Kurunegala) - 3.5/2.5, D. S. Senanayake College (Colombo) - 6/0, Nalanda College (Colombo) - 6/0, Nalanda College (Colombo) - 3.5/2/5, Rahula College (Matara) - 3.5/2.5, Vidyartha College (Kandy) - 3.5/2.5 and drew against Richmond College (Galle) - 3/3.

Although they had a proud record of being the only unbeaten team in the 6 round tournament in this age group category, had been very unfortunate not have won the championship. Ramith Hettiarachchi won a 'Board Prize' as well.

Pasidu Herath captains the team and the rest of the players are Dinuk Liyanage, Kaveesha Jayawardane, Thilina Dilshan, Yoshitha Atukorale, Ramith Hettiarachchi and Senith Sooriarachchi. The team is coached by Romesh Wijeyawardane while the MIC is H. A. Herath.

Shehan for youth Chess C'ships in Turkey (2007/11/10)

Shehan Kavishka Seneviratne of Ananda College has been selected to represent the country at the under 12 youth chess championships which will be worked off from November 17 to 28 in Turkey.

He had earlier represented the country at the under 12 Asian chess championships which held in the United Arab Emirates recently. He also clinched the boys under 12 title at the recent national youth chess championships.

He has so far won a total of 24 gold medals in different tournaments here and abroad under the guidance of coaches Lasantha Priyananda, D. Seneviratne, Sisira Kumara, Sumal Horawela and Ramesh Weerawardena who is the present coach of Ananda College.

However Shehan's tour to Turkey is in the balance at the moment due to lack of funds and is seeking financial assistance from well wishers.
